We have seen bread before. Almost 40 days ago we heard the words of the tempter: “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.” Jesus will not turn stones into bread. Instead, in his hands bread becomes something greater. He has answered Satan once again. For who else but the Son of God can take this bread and make it something greater?
We have seen wine before. At the wedding feast of Cana in Galillee, Jesus took water and changed it into wine. Recall his words at that time: my hour has not yet come. Tonight his hour has come: But what does Jesus do? He takes the cup of wine and makes it into something better. This is the cup of the new covenant in His blood.
And still the words of the steward of the feast echo in our ears:
“You have saved the best wine until now.”
