Consider also the OT reading: Isaiah 5:1-6 on the fate of the carefully tended vineyard that is the people of Israel when the Lord discovers it is all wild grapes.

A real message of caution, and a call to live into the real radical community Christians are called to (none of this 'radical inclusiveness' trolop that is common today). A call to a community that is radical in every way...but especially in love.

"my sense at this point is more and more leaning toward focusing on the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus: it's not just for holy week anymore"

It never was just for Holy Week. Preaching of the cross is "the power of God and the wisdom of God" Period.

Anabaptists historically spoke of a threefold baptism - baptism of the Spirit, baptism with water, and baptism in blood. The three belong together in the Christian life. Being practitioners of believers' baptism, they saw water baptism as following the inner baptism of the Spirit, but as then issuing inescapably into a life of suffering with and for Christ - the 'blood' part.

August 14 was the commemoration of Bonhoeffer and Maximillian Kolbe

On "cheap grace": "cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline. Communion without confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ."
