catherine of sienna was one of my heros for a long time, and then i read holy anorexia (well, first i read hilary mantels brilliant essay about the book, which can be found here: http://www.lrb.co.uk/v26/n05/mant01_.html, then i read bell, but details) i couldnt get over the pus eating and self loathing, which might make me modern, or not considering the time, etc, but yeah...
