The causation could run in the other direction: The more faith one puts in government's competence and ability to solve social problems, the more one rejects the church as an institution competing for ultimate (earthly) allegiance.

i am not sure that i see that correlation, the people i know who are most dismissive of the church are as dismissive of the state...but my sample size includeds lesbian united church members, socialist lutherans, anarchist atheists, and wombat lovers, so ymmv
