how to repair a leaking toilet

Toilet problems got you looking like this?

not to worry.  with just a few tools and some patience, you too can fix that leak, hiss or running toilet.  If there is a leak, it might just be that the the tanks bolts need some tightening.  Get some new brass ones and replace them.

Or it might require further surgery.  Like replacing the whole flapper and spud washer assembly.

You'll need some stuff:  spud wrench and pipe joint compound.  Shut the water off, scoop and sponge the water out, and remove the tank bolts, old spud washer and overflow tube assembly and clean all the holes where the new parts will go.  Here's my particular choice of replacement part, though you can get other models.

After getting the new assembly in place, tighten until it squeaks - but don't overtighten as the plastic could crack.  Put some pipe joint compound on the new spud washer and carefully place the tank back on the bowl.  Tighten the tank bolts alternately until they are snug - making sure the tank is level.  Remember, the tank should rest on the large spud washer, not on the porcelain of the bowl assembly.  Don't worry if it wobbles a bit - it will steady out when it is filled with water again.

Attach your water line, and check for leaks or drips by feeling the ends of the tank bolts under neath the tank.  If needed, give them another 1/2 turn.

Next week - soldering copper pipe.

And to think that some people say that theology has nothing to do with the "real world".
