Bruce Dunbar: Eye Candy Solo exhibition of work by long-time Edmonton artist Bruce Dunbar. Opening Reception with Artist in Attendance 1-4pm, Saturday, February 21, 2009 Common Sense: 10546 - 115 Street, Edmonton Alberta Canada.
The opening reception of the 16th Annual ECAS exhibit took place last night at the Common Sense gallery. At the risk of incurring either the wrath or derision of Vue Weekly or the fine folks at the North Edmonton Sculpture Workshop, I will attempt to write a completely unqualified review of the show, in several parts. Here is part 1:
Licorice Tea, I thought, is great - among the best of the show. If I had $1500, I'd buy it and put it in my house, and look at it on a regular basis. Or you could buy it for me. Or if you buy it and keep it for yourself, let me know when I can come over and look at it. I'm not kidding.
The show runs until October 30. Stay tuned for the next installation.
I think Dr Andrews will do very well with and for the people of the Anglican Diocese of Algoma. I got to know him a little bit through various church connections over the years, and he will certainly bring a measure of pastoral and intellectual gifts to the people of the diocese and the Canadian house of bishops.
Our prayers for God's blessings on Dr Andrews, his family, and the people of the diocese.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - May 20, 1959 - June 26, 1997.
One of my favorite things in this world. Take 4 minutes out of your day and play it. All that is beautiful is not lost.
There may be a better version out there. I'll keep looking... Bruddah Iz, one of the last full blooded Hawaiians. The first vid gives some footage of who he was. The second has the better sound quality.
A note on the first vid: "The Hawaiʻi State Flag flew at half-staff on July 10, 1997, the day of Iz's funeral. His koa wood coffin lay in state at the Capitol building in Honolulu. Over 10,000 people attended his funeral. Thousands of fans gathered and cheered as his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean at Mākua Beach on July 12, 1997."

Grand Opening of the NESW and the Common Sense gallery and the solo exhibition of AUTOGRAPH: Sculpture and Drawing by Rob Willms.
Take some time to have a look.
Two of Mr Willms' offerings to the Muses grace our backyard, although one of his pieces has been the subject of either interactive art appreciation through the addition of coloured sidewalk chalk, or sheer philistine vandalism:
