i have come to be a great believer in the virtue of walking as a spiritual discipline for those of us who live in cities and towns and such places. I don't mean the sort of intense power-walking of physical fitness types. I mean the casual walking through neighbourhoods, across streets, past and then into shops and cafes - the sort of walking which actually goes somewhere, which allows for those chance encounters and observations. I have met more neighbours while walking than while driving.
I believe the only times Jesus used an advanced form of transportation to get anywhere was on the road to Palm Sunday, and, once must add, at least a few boat rides. But even when the other disciples chose the boat, Jesus preferred to start out across the sea by foot...
I digress, which is itself the point.

Let us not forget his glorious ascension.

It's also a great way for you to live up to your name.
Although not related directly to the spiritual discipline aspect, I wonder what kind of a church growth plan a parish might develop if its members committed themselves to walking through their neighbourhoods on a regular basis.

CPM - I thought that was jet propulsion?
Donald - I think you are getting at what I think I am getting at, or at least hoping to get at and put into practice.
anthony - need to touch base

I've taken to walking through our community (Comox or Courtenay) two to three miles (2.5 to 4 km) per day for the last three years. It's my cardio program, but find it a wonderful time to be in touch with God, to listen to some good music (Robin Mark, and others) and to meet people in the community. I usually pass by a coffee shop or two where I undoubtedly meet and greet parishioners.
