Central Cappadocia, near Goreme. Homes, monasteries, convents and churches were hewn out of the rock.
While the outside of the cave churches aren't much to look at, here's a peek at the inside of one of them. Notice their eyes have been removed over the years. A dollar to anyone who can guess why.

RR gets part of the prize. A good deal of the damage was done by Muslims out of a belief that such images were forbidden by Koranic standards. There was also some damage done during the iconoclastic controversies.
